HomeVoting: Vote by Mail

Vote by Mail

If you are eligible to vote by mail and choose to do so, you can follow the steps below to make sure your vote counts.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE BY MAIL IN TEXAS?

  • Any voter 65 years of age or older.
  • Voters who are sick or disabled.
  • Voters who will be out of the county on Election Day and through all of early voting.
  • Eligible voters who are confined in jail.

APPLY FOR YOUR BALLOT BY MAIL

  • Voters 65 or older and voters with disabilities can file an "annual application" once a year covering all elections that year.
  • Other voters eligible to vote by mail must apply for a ballot by mail one election at a time.
  • Pick up your application at your County Elections Office or go online to Harrisvotes.org or Galvestonvotes.org to download and print your application for mail-in ballot.
  • Complete and sign your application. Your signature on your application must match how you will sign your ballot.
  • Attach postage and mail your application to the Early Voting Clerk in your county's elections office.
  • Application must be received at least 11 days before Election Day.

COMPLETE AND RETURN YOUR BALLOT BY MAIL

  • Ballots will be mailed 30-45 days before election day, or by 7 days after the office receives the application, whichever is later.
  • Complete your ballot using a blue or black pen, not a pencil.
  • Place your voted ballot in the Ballot Envelope and seal it.
  • Place Ballot Envelope in the enclosed pre-addressed carrier envelope.
  • Seal carrier envelope and sign where indicated exactly as you signed the ballot by mail request.
  • Place appropriate postage and mail it via USPS or other common carriers such as FedEx or UPS, etc.
  • You can also hand-deliver your sealed return envelope to your local Elections Office during regular business hours. You will need to show a valid photo ID to do so.
  • Make sure the Elections Office receives your ballot on or before Election Day.

CHECK TO CONFIRM YOUR BALLOT HAS BEEN RECEIVED

  • Harris County voters may go online to check the status of their mail ballot.
  • Galveston County voters may go to the county Elections Office's website Voter Rosters and search the Mail Ballot rosters to find their name.
