HomeParticipate: Ways to Engage

There are many ways to engage with the Bay Area League. We are an all volunteer membership organization.

Below is a description of volunteer opportunities and the different ways you can contribute to our mission: Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy. If any of these volunteer opportunities interest you, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to working with you!

VOTER REGISTRATION

LWV-Bay Area has a very active voter registration program that has focused on registering high school seniors. We have ongoing relationships with high schools in Clear Creek ISD, Friendswood ISD and Dickinson ISD, holding fall and spring voter registration drives at all of the schools. Since COVID, we have held drive-thru voter registrations and have been collaborating with different groups to reach potential voters. If you would like to be part of our voter registration team, please reach out to Judith Oppenheim at voterservice@lwvbayareatx.org.

VOTE411

VOTE411 is our premier, national, LWV online Voters Guide that helps you learn about candidates and where they stand on key voter issues. Volunteers from LWV-Bay Area invite input from candidates for many local races in Harris and Galveston Counties. Candidates for each race are given the same set of questions appropriate to their race so readers can see how the candidates differ on important issues. You can also look up your sample ballot and polling locations as you prepare to vote. If you have questions or would like to volunteer with our VOTE411 team, please email VOTE411.lwvbatx@gmail.com.

VOTERS GUIDES

LWV-Bay Area purchases thousands of printed voters guides prior to elections. League members distribute these voters guides to area libraries, city halls, churches and other public places. If you would like to be part of the voter guide distribution team, please email info@lwvbayareatx.org.

CANDIDATES FORUMS

The Bay Area League holds candidates forums for selected local municipal elections when invited by specific cities/entities in our area. Hearing from candidates on the key issues is a critical step in the voting process. If you would like to help with planning and/or logistics or to volunteer for such roles as timekeeper, screening committee, usher/runner, etc., please email info@lwvbayareatx.org.

DISCUSSION MEETINGS

The Bay Area League holds four discussion meetings a year. The Board selects topics based on state and national League priorities and from input from members at the Annual Meeting. Currently the state and national priorities are part of the Campaign to Make Democracy Work® which includes voting rights/election laws, census and redistricting. Other urgent issues involve air quality/climate change, women’s health and health care for low-income Texans. Traditionally we also discuss the proposed amendments to the Texas constitution that make it to the ballot after a legislative session. If you would like to present League background material on issues at League discussion meetings by reading 2-4 pages of material and summarizing it at the meeting, please email info@lwvbayareatx.org.

EMAILS

When you join the Bay Area League, you automatically join the Texas and US Leagues, and you will receive information on current issues and options on how you can participate. Our League emails the VOTER newsletter once a month, and when the Texas Legislature is in session, you will receive the Monday Capitol Action Report from LWVTX.
